Washington, DC - The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) recently announced its 34th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), to be held September 8th through 11th at the state-of-the-art Washington D.C. Convention Center. The theme of this year's conference, Defining The Moment and The Movement, is hailed as a call to action for the Foundation's constituency, urging all to recommit themselves to the challenges of uplifting their communities. Congressional members Stephanie Tubbs Jones (Ohio, 11th District) and Kendrick B. Meek (Florida 17th District) will co-chair this years conference.
According to CBCF President Weldon J. Rougeau, this event will have significance beyond its normal focus. Our constituents will be coming together at ALC during an extraordinary point in our history. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1954 Supreme Court Decision in Brown vs. Board of Education and the 40th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, we must recommit to the promise of these two great acts of civil litigation. The sessions we have planned for this ALC speak to the urgency of our task.
"The array of Braintrusts and Issue Forums is extensive, covering a number of topics on economic development and wealth-building, health, education, and criminal justice. This is a forum that allows everyday citizens to examine these issues and communicate face-to-face with Members of Congress, well-known political and business leaders, academicians, and people from the entertainment and sports industry," said CBCF Chairman William J. Jefferson (D-LA). "We urge all of our constituents to take advantage of this unique opportunity to interact with policy makers and influence the decisions most important in their lives," he continued.
CBCF boasts a number of confirmed speakers of national stature for this year's event, including: Civil Rights advocate, Julian Bond; activist, Dick Gregory; media mogul, Russell Simmons; actor/author Bill Cosby, and actor/comedian Jamie Foxx to name a few. Of particular interest this year are the sessions skewed for a younger audience called, The Black Party: An Emerging Leaders Affair, and the Emerging Leaders Symposium. Both events are designed to increase the sense of civic responsibility among young people.
Finally, the CBCF will end its gathering with the Annual Awards Dinner, a gathering of more than 3,000 that has attracted the attention of invited guests President George W. Bush and Democratic Presidential candidate, John F. Kerry. Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards is expected to attend the Annual Prayer Breakfast. CBCF urges people to attend this year's event and visit the website at www.cbcfinc.org or call (202) 263-2800 for more information.
