Are Emerging Ethnic Marketers Missing the Boat on the New eCom-nomy?
I observe a very disturbing trend in the effective usage of the Internet eCom-nomy. I use the term eCom-nomy basically from two concepts: 1.eCommerce and 2. Economics. The Internet economy is quickly approaching 1 trillion dollars in revenue (more depending on the source). That would be quickly close to 5% - 10% of the US economy. This is why I created the terms eCom-nomics and eCom-nomy. The Internet economy is having world wide implications.
But are people of color going to be savvy enough get their piece of the ecommerce pie? If not I think we will pass up the greatest opportunity to achieve more economic parity, financial freedom, and monetary independence in the history of the world.
Never before has the world been able to freely trade throughout its diverse sectors. Soon empowered by eBay - Amazon and other major ecommerce players poor third world countries will be able to trade with other countries on the world markets. eBay alone accounts for about 14% of all ecommerce and enables 450,000 people internationally to make fulltime or primary livings online. But how many African American or Hispanics are running viable eBay businesses?
Sure many Blacks and Hispanics have web sites but how many have any serious marketing or sales strategies using things like email, autoresponders, search engines, joint ventures, or eBay sales and marketing strategies. These things are essential to running profitable ebusinesses. Many times in our communities we complain about lack of financial opportunities, however one of the greatest opportunities for business advancement is right in front of us... but we are blowing it!
I suggest that we seriously begin to harness the awesome power of the Internet to build our businesses fast, or once again we will find that we are left on the side lines of economic development. And this time it won't be because of racism or redlining but because of lack of vision and fear of the future.
