HP's Microenterprise Development Program, a Minority Small Business
Grant
We
are pleased to inform you of HP's Microenterprise Development Program,
a new grant opportunity for nonprofit microenterprise development agencies
and programs working in underserved communities. Please help us spread
the word! Hewlett-Packard Company Microenterprise Development Program
providing economic opportunity in underserved communities.
GRANT
OPPORTUNITY FACT SHEET
HP
has a vision of "e-Inclusion" - a vision of the future in
which all people have access to the social and economic opportunities
of the 21st century, and can use technology as a means to learn, work
and thrive. Our goal is to help close the gap between technology-empowered
and technology-excluded communities worldwide and demonstrate our commitment
to global citizenship.
HP is requesting proposals for participation in the
Microenterprise Development Program, a new grant initiative targeting
nonprofit microenterprise development agencies that serve clients in
low-income communities in the United States. The goal of the program
is to make these agencies more efficient and effective and assist them
in providing their clients with access to technology and associated
training to optimize its use.
By partnering with these agencies to build their capacity, HP seeks
to build long-term productive capacity in these organizations and the
communities they serve. HP also seeks to assist the microenterprise
industry in the U.S. through supporting best practices in the use of
technology for microenterprise development.
Through the Microenterprise Development Program, HP will support nonprofit
agencies that have a primary focus on providing microenterprise development
programs and services in underserved communities. Each grant award will
have a total list price value of $150,000 to $300,000 in equipment,
cash, services and support. In addition, recipients will receive a travel
grant to participate in a symposium focused on increasing the capacity
of the microenterprise development industry. In determining awardees,
priority consideration will be given to agencies that clearly demonstrate
the following: thoughtful and innovative organizational technology vision
and plan breadth and diversity of partnership and support within the
community capacity to execute and support the project.

How Women, Minorities
Can Get Corporate Aid
By ARLENE HIRSCH
Question: Are there
any big corporations that award grants to women looking to start their
own businesses?
--
Linda, New York, N.Y.
Linda:
You can use the list of corporate grantmakers available through the
Foundation Center
, a New York-based authority on institutional philanthropy, as the basis
for that research. The organization provides an extensive list of links
to corporate foundation Web pages where you can learn more about corporate
giving practices and priorities.
Since
many corporations focus their giving priorities in the communities where
they conduct business, you should focus some of your attention on those
companies with a New York headquarters or presence. Also, give some
thought to the corporate products, services and missions whose corporate
identity would benefit from being perceived as a supporter of minorities,
especially women, and entrepreneurship. For example, the Citigroup Foundation
is headquartered in New York and supports small-business development
and entrepreneurship. Another group is the American Express Foundation,
a philanthropic organization that promotes and encourages economic independence
through entrepreneurship and small-business development.
In
addition, you also might want to consider other foundations. While you're
using the resources of the Foundation Center, take a look at the foundations
that offer grants to individuals. You might be able to identify one
that gives grants to women interested in starting their own businesses.
Grants
for Genealogical Organizations
If
you represent an organization which serves the genealogical community
at large - or if you serve a smaller community (perhaps you produce
a family newsletter, host a website, organize reunions or some such
thing) -- and find yourself shy of necessary funds, please consider
checking out the following site below to apply for a small grant. The
owner will review all submissions and periodically select one for a
donation. Her goal is one per month. Submissions will remain active
candidates for six months from the date of receipt. Hint: She finds
herself drawn to innovative ideas that can serve as a model to others!
