12 WAYS TO FIND 90 BILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR
COLLEGE
By Dr. Stephen Jones, BA, MA, MBA, EdD
Did you know that billions of dollars in scholarships go
unused each year? For twenty years, I've counseled college students and
their parents. The most frequent question parents ask is - where can I
find scholarships for college? The rising cost of college is causing tension
across the country because parents cannot afford to send their sons/daughters
to the four-year college of their choice. When parents do receive financial
aid award from the school, it's generally not enough - still leaving them
the responsibility of $5,000 - $10,000. One family sought after money
by paying $1,500 for a scholarship consultant. Later, that same family
discovered that by researching the Internet they could discover the scholarships
on their own.
Parents often ask how soon they should begin to look for
college scholarships? My first response is the ninth grade. By the time
that your son/daughter reaches 11th grade, they should have a binder containing
scholarship information. When your son/daughter reaches 11th grade, they
should begin to send out scholarship letters to organizations that allow
for early submissions. The summer before senior year is your opportunity
to send out hundreds of scholarship forms and letters.
Here are 12 ways that a student can begin to uncover the
90 billion dollars in scholarships:
1) Send a letter to your local college fraternity of sorority
requesting information about their scholarship.
2) Contact your local rotary club to ask about their scholarship
application.
3) Visit your local legislator's office to inquire about
new scholarships offered by the state or federal government offices.
4) Visit local stores (i.e. Home Depot, CVS, super markets)
to inquire about scholarships.
5) Contact local colleges to ask about a free list of scholarships
that they offer.
6) Go online and conduct a search for scholarships. Some
of the topics you can enter include - free money, scholarships, college
financial aid, money for college, free scholarship, government grants
of scholarships, etc.
7) Ask your local religious organizations about scholarships.
8) Start a family scholarship fund that allows family members
to contribute funds. Set limits on the amount of money a family member
can request.
9) Ask your employer about scholarships offered to children
of employees.
10) Ask your company's credit union representative about
scholarships that they offer to students.
11) Enter writing/essay contests for college=bound students.
Look for opportunities in magazines like the Writer's Digest and others.
12) Make a scholarship appeal on a local radio program
and receive funding from their listeners.
If you implement these steps, you have the potential to
uncover billions of dollars of hidden scholarships. Dr. Stephen Jones
is a nationally recognized speaker and author of "Seven Secrets of
How to Study, www.sevensecrets-books.com. He offers more than 100 scholarship
websites in his book Seven Secrets of How to Study. It's a book that will
help you to achieve better grades and to obtain scholarships for college.

Scholarships
for Student Activists
PLEASE
DISTRIBUTE WIDELY TO STUDENT ACTIVISTS.
The
Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has applications available for student activists
who are building the progressive movement check to see the latest deadlines.
The following announcement should answer any questions about the Fund,
our scholarships, the students we support, and the process for applying
for a grant. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please send
this announcement to them. If you have additional questions, contact us
by email and we will try to answer them for you.
What is the Davis-Putter
Fund?
Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based
grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the
college level and are involved in building the
movement for social and economic justice.
Who
does the Fund support?
Davis-Putter grantees are both graduate and
undergraduate students who are enrolled in an
accredited school for the time period covered by their grant. Although
US citizenship is not a
consideration, applicants must live in the United
States and plan to enroll an accredited program in the US in order to
qualify. There is a strong
preference for grantees who plan to stay in the United States and build
the progressive movement here.
What
kind of activities are grantees involved in?
Early recipients fought for civil rights, against
McCarthyism, and for peace in Vietnam. More
recently, grantees have been active in the
struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression;
building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through
international, anti-imperialist
solidarity.
How
large are the scholarships the Fund provides?
The
maximum grant is $6,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the
applicant's circumstances and the amount of funding available. All of
the funds for scholarships come from the contributions of individual
donors and we generally make between 25 and 30 grants each year. Grants
are for one year although students may reapply for subsequent years.
What
are the deadlines for applying for a grant?
Applications and the supporting documents --
transcripts, a personal statement, two letters of
recommendation, a photograph, financial aid
reports -- must be postmarked by April 1.
Decisions will be announced in July.
How do I get an application packet?
Send a self-addressed stamped #10 envelope to the address listed below.
You should not send envelope by carriers requiring a signature. If you
are interested in applying in a subsequent year, please contact us for
details then.
