The Complete Startup Guide for the Black Entrepreneur is a perfect name
for the book authored by Bill Boudreaux on starting a home based or
small black business. It is also a good business primer for any minority
or small businessperson. Boudreaux a MBA and CPA by way of Louisiana,
has written the most comprehensive book I have ever read on starting
a black business. I have read a good number of books on black and minority
business, which were very good however my earlier readings focused more
on marketing or economics. Bill's book is much more detailed and revealing
of the diverse basic skills you will have to enjoin to run a successful
Black or minority business.
"4 out of 5 enterprises fail within the first
5 years"
Mr. Boudreaux is sobering about the obstacles of being
in business where 4 out of 5 enterprises fail within the first 5 years,
and the additional issues to overcome for black businesses like racism
and skepticism. However, he is very reassuring and competent to give
the directives and operatives to succeed in business. He uses the term
BESt (Black Entrepreneur Startup) company throughout his book to designate
what you want your company to become. Bill teaches you the basics like
how to get focused, carve out a business space in your home, plan ahead
and be very organized, The legal issues of choosing the type of business
structure of your enterprise, putting together your business plan, management,
marketing, and getting someone to help you work on your financial statements.
Learn Basic Business Book Keeping
As a matter of fact after reading his book I finally
feel I understand the two basic kinds of accounting statements for small
or home based businesses, the balance sheet and income statement and
why - they are important. Boudreaux takes complicated accounting concepts
and breaks them down so entrepreneurs outside of the field can get an
understanding of the basics enough to work with an accountant. He has
a section on basic business math for those of us who forgot important
business equations like: "Finding the Percent of a Number; Finding
What Percent One Number is to Another Number"; Calculating Simple
Interest; and Everyday Business Math Problems".
Learn About Business Loan Sources and How to Get Major
Contracts
He really stresses the importance of cash flow to a business
and how to collect your receivables. He also
does an excellent job of explaining how to prepare your business plan
towards getting funding. He has an extensive list of SBA
and Microloan sources in some cases state-by-state breakdowns. Furthermore,
Mr. Boudreaux really shares the 411 on becoming Minority Certified to
get contracts from the government and major corporations.
It should be stated for the record, when we hear about the money available
for minorities from the government or corporations to businesses they
are actually from contracts set aside for certified Black - minority
- or disadvantaged business and not a free for all with government grants.
Grants are usually for non-profits. Bill explains the real deal on grants
and loans for Black and Minority businesses. He explains what needs
to be filled out for SBA loans and the dynamics of being a certified
minority business.
On the other hand there are grants for profit type
businesses from corporate foundations but they are based
on business plan competitions. Boudreaux's book will show
you step-by-step how to write an effective business plan.
His section on SBA and Microloan sources are worth the modest price
tag of this book in my opinion (only $15.99 and $20.49 with Shipping).

Reading this Book is Like Getting a Mini-MBA
Bill Boudreaux has a great section on Internet resources.
Even an Internet netizen like me is pleased to be made aware of these
useful web sites. Reading Boudreaux's book felt like getting a mini-MBA
or taking a good entrepreneurial workshop with a trusted friend.
The only shortcoming of this book may be it could have
had some more strategies to get a businesses running with shoestring
resources. Like pre-selling techniques at trade shows where you sell
to buyers with prototypes and fill orders with factor financing in some
industries or advance sales.
Both of the techniques have helped me in the past. This

However The Complete Startup Guide for the Black Entrepreneur
