I am
sorry I did not have a chance to publish the August issue of Keep it Real...Profitable.
My daughter was home from school (I am a stay at home dad), and I had
a very demanding month, in terms of my web design and search engine consulting
work. Please understand these are my core businesses. Publishing Keep
it Real...Profitable! ezine, is more of an act of faith and love. This
is because, I always want to help people to develop themselves to become
as financially independent as possible. In this regard, we will work to
make up our August issue up to you, in our next couple of issues with
some really good information on building your e business.
Problems
for our AOL and Yahoo Subscribers
Plus
the September issue has been severely delayed due to new server installations.
I have had to install my mailing list on a new list server remotely because,
ISP's no longer allow people to e mail more than 50 people at a time.
The spammers are killing ezine marketing for legitimate opt-in marketers.
AOL and Yahoo are making it almost impossible for anyone with an email
based ezine to send it to subscribers. My AOL and Yahoo Subscribers may
never get their copies. Something has to be done about this situation.
"565
New Subscribers"
We have
had a robust growth rate to our e-zine with 565 new subscribers since
our last issue. Thank you, to all our new subscribers for your confidence
and trust. We will continue to make this a quality e-zine comparable to
e-zines, e books, and subscribers sites that are subscription based. Our
mission will be to help establish small and minority businesses as viable
players in web commerce, one of the fastest growing industries in the
history of the world.
"On
Winning Two Golden Web Awards"
I appreciate
the 2 Golden Web awards I received from International Association of Web
Masters and Designers. , I wanted to thank them for bestowing the two
prestigious Awards for my web design and marketing site Ebiz by Design
and the site I designed for my wife Carols Art Shows.
Hopefully these two will be the first two of many more to come. Maybe
some day I will even win a Webby Award! I know it may seem silly but,
its nice to get some recognition, for all the hard work and coding, at
God forsaken times of the morning, that I do. I don't do razzle dazzle
web design on this site, I keep it simple and try to get out valuable

Memorial to Gregory Hines, James
Davis, Aunt Dottie"
P.S.
This issue is in honor of three departed ancestors, Gregory Hines, James
Davis, City Councilmen of New York, and Aunt Dottie. I had a chance to
meet Gregory Hines, as a fashion designer in my first business. He was
a gracious and friendly celebrity. James Davis, I never met, but since
I spent a good deal of my most memorable years in Bed Stuy and Downtown
Brooklyn, I am aware of his courageous fight to stop the violence in those
communities. Aunt Dottie, was one of those rare souls who made every one
she came in contact feel special. They will all be missed. I believe that
God has a better place prepared for these ancestors. Rest in Peace.

Feature: It's Your Time to
Thrive On-line Part 1
Why
Black - Hispanic - Minority - Women and Small Business people should Embrace
E business Now!
Don't
believe the hype, became a musical anthem of the once controversial rap
group Public Enemy. The point of the song was that people should not believe
all the negative stereo types and demonization of young black and Hispanic
or Latino urban males, by the major media. This same mantra can be applied
or extended to the step child of traditional business -- the Internet
economy. Contrary to popular belief the Internet Business economy is maturing,
stabilizing, and growing quickly to become a major force in International
Business. In point of fact, now would be the perfect time to stake your
claim in on-line business as a Black entrepreneur, Hispanic business person,
minority or women owned business.
"Soon
Internet Sales will Reach 1.5 Trillion Dollars a
Year. This is Equivalent to 10% of the US Economy!"
More
recently, Internet business has been characterized by the burn cash and
crash dotcoms. Nevertheless, the more true picture of E commerce is the
present 300 Billion dollars in Internet Sales. Soon Internet sales will
reach 1.5 Trillion dollars a year. This is equivalent to 10% of the U.S.
economy! Therefore, now is the time, to rise with the tide, and stake
your claim in Internet business! Furthermore, demographic groups that
have been traditionally considered outside of the technology loop have
reached critical mass in Internet usage.
"Now
is The Time!"
Hispanics
have reached over 15 million Internet users with half of U.S. Hispanics
presently on-line. African Americans have reached over 10 million users.
Women presently comprise the majority of Internet users. Therefore, web
sites and ezines that target these gender or ethnic markets have a large
number of potential prospects. If you have been standing on the side lines
wondering when, or if, you should make the plunge into e commerce. Now
is the time!
"Consider
Making the Jump to
E commerce Right Now!"
Why
does the Internet E business hold so much promise for Black, Hispanic,
Minority, and Women owned businesses? Over the next months we will examine
the reasons that you should consider making the jump to e commerce right
now. These will be the subsequent discussion of advantages: Part 1. Low
start up costs; 2. Low promotional costs; Part 3. Pinpoint
accuracy for targeting markets; Part 4. Low Cost Research and Business
Measurement; Part 5. Maturity of Web Applications and Software;
Conclusion.

"The
1st Business Blog for Black - Hispanic and Minority E business and Ecommerce"
In order
to get you more timely news and business information, I am starting a
new feature on the Einfonews site called Kamau's Business Blog. Blog is
short for Web logs. Blogs are automated web publishing systems which helps
me to build web pages from an email or web based interface. Blogs utilize
an XML based publishing format called RSS. In starting my business blog
back in July, this became the 1st business blog by a Black person for
minority business. Therefore, Einfonews.com our
main web site, is the first web site to publish an ezine and blog, to
share effective tactics for building an e business and successful web
marketing.
"If
you want to get the 411 on the latest developments at Einfonews, and Keep
it Real Profitable, read Kamau's Business Blog page"
Don't
let all this techie jargon confuse you. All this means is that if you
check out Kamau's Blog page every other day, I will be posting editorial,
minority business news, and pending grants, loans, etc. This technology
will give me the ability to post important info as it happens. In contrast,
given my schedule, it might take me a week or two to display this information
in the traditional web publishing format. So if you want to get the 411
on the latest developments at Einfonews, and Keep it Real Profitable ezine,
read Kamau's Business Blog page
on a regular basis. Plus Everyday I will be posting an e business

3. E biz Tips: Recognize Your
"MWR"
"
Your MWR is Central to the
Success of your Web Site"
After developing the marketing plan of your e business,
and your unique selling proposition or point (USP covered in the last
issue), you should recognize and develop your most wanted response(MWR). Your most wanted response
or MWR is central to the success of
your web site. This is because, you design your web site or e business
around your MWR. The features and even navigation of your site is based
on your MWR.
For example, if you have an informational site your MWR
may be to fill out a form to receive more information. If this is the
case you might want a form above the fold (on the computer screen before
someone has to scroll). You would place the form on all of your web pages
at very visible site locations. Popup or Popunder windows with cookies
(code scripted into the web page to help with personalization), with subscription
sales copy, will also have to be developed to convince site visitors to
sign up on your form.
"Always use a Cookie with a
Popup or Popunder Window"
Just a footnote, make sure you always use a cookie with
a popup (or popunder) window because site users dislike them to a large
extent. Popunder windows annoy site visitors less because they are less
intrusive. The cookie will insure that they only get the popup or popunder
window once in a site session or visit. Pop up windows are usually smaller
windows that popup when a visitors surfs to your site. Popunder windows
also open, but they open under the page, that your visitor is surfing,
and therefore, is usually less annoying to most people.
On the other hand, If you have an affiliate site (you refer
your site traffic to a third party to sell products or services for a
commission) your MWR is to get site visitors to click on an affiliate
link. The main affiliate site then should be able to close the transaction
with strong sales copy compelling your site visitors to buy. This is rarely
the case, in that you will have to pre-sell the affiliate product effectively
so, that the seller can close the deal. In reality you are really the
pitchman, and the affiliate program owner is the closer.
"The MWR of an Affiliate Site"
Therefore the MWR of an Affiliate site is to make a strong
recommendation to its site users to get them to visit the affiliate site
pre-sold or at least with a strong interest in the affiliate product.
According to Internet business experts Dr. Ken Evoy and Dr. Ralph Wilson
AKA Dr. E biz, affiliate programs work best when affiliates provide quality
content on their sites, build site users respect and trust, and only recommend
quality products to their readers that they have used.
On a personal level I am a nonconformist type that doesn't
like working for major corporations, direct sales companies, MLMs, or
affiliate programs. However, there are some affiliate programs that are
so excellent, and have helped me so much in my ebusiness development,
I am compelled to advocate them to you and my other e-zine subscribers
and web site visitors.
"An E commerce site's MWR is to motivate the
site visitor to buy its products or services."
Our final example of MWR is on an E commerce site. An E
commerce site's MWR is to motivate the site visitor to buy its products
or services. Dr. Ken Evoy in his e book Make My Site Sell!, goes so far
as to give examples on how to create special navigation on your site to
drive sales. He further suggests ways to keep site users focused on the
buying process with little distractions from links to other content once
they are on your shopping cart or sales copy pages. Since Evoy has made
millions of dollars on the web with various products, some of them very
difficult products to sell on-line, I would strongly advise you read his
book Make My Site
Sell!
Some of even his more subtle suggestions about the sales
process and MWR on my sites have made a big difference in the success
of my e businesses. It should also be noted that Evoy, makes the case
for also having a backup response to compliment your MWR. We will
tackle this subject in our next issue.

Notepad

a very powerful free version. I use it to format my plain text email so
that it appears the same way across all mail clients. This is important
when composing business e mails that you don't want wrapping all over

you can format every thing in Notepad Lite by clicking

Ebiz by Design: Color Theory
"Use
Color to Paint Your
Web Site's Sales Message"
Color
theory, to keep it simple and not too geeky, could be described as the
study of the cultural symbolism ascribed to various colors. It is the
study and discipline that graphic and more recently web designers, use
to symbolize the identity and purposes of a web site. Certain colors have
cultural symbolism and implication to persons in our society. Therefore,
you can convey and imply certain images and messages about your web site,
company, or brand with the chosen colors of your web site.
There
are of course, other elements which convey your e business' corporate
identity, image, brand and goodwill. Like your logo, promotional materials,
or corporate communications, and even your sponsorships and charities,
that your company engages in, also increases the overall perception of
your company in the marketplace.
However,
since most of your site visitors first impression will be their proverbial
"lasting impression", it is important to get the most basic
elements of your site's features correctly -- its
colors.
"Don't
get Creative with Your Linking Colors"
One
of the most basic colors to get right are the standard accepted colors
of the net: the link colors. Link colors are usually blue (for example
0000ff RGB color code), active link
colors are usually red or maroon (CC0000
or 990000 respectively), and visited
link colors are usually a washed out purple color.
Since these colors are the standard default colors on-line, and your web
site is a computer interface (and not an artists palette), don't get creative
with these colors. Many usability experts (people who study how site visitors
use the web), suggest this policy because, when people first learn to
use the web they are taught to look for these link colors.
Two
other color elements I would suggest you keep standard in most situations
is your background color being white and your font colors being black.
Black fonts and text on a white background offer the highest contrast
and is easiest combination to use. This is considered Classic typography.
This is why most large and successful e commerce sites feature white backgrounds
and black text. When you do change the font and background colors, for
creative license, just make sure the colors you choose contrast each other
extremely well. But from an usability stand point, black text against
a white back ground is the most beneficial because, it is the easiest
to read.
Red
or maroon are good contrasting colors for both black and white. This is
why they are used as the colors for active links and headlines on many
sites. It may help you, when picking contrasting colors, for backgrounds
and font colors, to learn to use the color wheels. A color wheel will
show you that yellow and gold are good contrasting colors for blue, and
tan is a good contrasting color for brown. Do a search on Google to get
examples of color wheels.
"Examining
Western Color Norms and Symbolism"
Getting
back to the more symbolic and implied power of your site's color theme,
lets examine some western cultural color norms and representations. I
will delimit my social commentary on the negative Manicheism influenced
dualism endemic in some of these values.
=>
White represents -- Purity, clean, brightness, good
=>
Black represents -- mystery, soberness, formality, death, evil, and also
elegance.
=>
Brown -- natural, wholesome, earthy
=>
Red -- passion, vibrant, sexy
=>
Green -- life, health, wealth
=>
Gray -- mature, conservative
=>
Blue -- corporate, business, sad,
=>
Yellow - intelligence, energy
"There
are only 216 colors that are
consistent on both Macs and PC's show"
There
are millions of variations of these colors, that most recent computer
screens will show these days. However, there are only 216 colors that
both MAC and PC's show across the board. These colors are called the web
safe color palette. Try to create your web site within this color palette
if at all possible. Colors outside of this web safe color palette can
be will be replaced, with another color, or can be emulated by dithering.
However, a dithered color will ad to your file size and downloading speed.
"If
you have an International site research how
colors symbolize different things in different cultures."
This
is why it is important to use common sense when choosing colors for your
site. Pastel colors would be fine for a children's site but, erode the
confidence of your site visitor's on a business site. Tan, Green, and
brown would do fine on a environmental site or whole foods site but, be
less well received on a techie site. Fiery Red would be great for a romance
site but, yellow or gold accents on a grey background would be better
for a consultants site like Dr.
E Biz . In closing, it should be noted, colors imply different things
in different cultures. Therefore, it you do business internationally research
how colors symbolize different things in different cultures. Choose your
colors wisely and paint the positive and accurate picture you want to
convey about your e business.

Your SEO: What is a Web Directory
"Listing
your Web Site with Major Directories Should be the Spring Board of Your
Search Engine Promotion and Optimization"
In my
goal of helping small and minority business people understand how to promote
their businesses, I wanted to start with the basics of search engine optimization
(SEO). SEO is important because, it is one of the best forms of Internet
Promotion or Web marketing. This is because, unlike traditional advertising,
search engine optimization can be free, and usually is met with less anxiety
by Internet users. Advertising of any sought is understood, by many people,
as attempting to sell us something down the line. Using a search engine
to find information is actually seeking information that is wanted or
needed. Therefore, when site users visit
your site, from a key word submission in a search engine, they feel less
defensive, because your site is something they find to help themselves.
At the
very beginning of our road to creating search engine friendly web sites
we should understand the difference between an Internet Directory like
Yahoo and a Search Engine like Google. More Importantly we should understand
the inseparable and now synergistic relationship between Internet directories
and search engines. An Internet directory is an organized web site or
portal, as they are some times called, listing web sites usually by categories.
The Internet directory, in stark contrast to a search engine, accepts
submissions for its web site listings, after review by human editors.
In short, people called editors, look at the
sites to be accepted in Internet directories.
While
on the other hand, a search engine is a database of web sites, that
are included and ranked by technologies like web spiders, bots, and ranking
algorithms. Web spiders, from search engines, follow links on pages
of web sites, and download pages to include in their databases. They download
web pages, to Internet servers (which are just computers that send web
pages to your personal computer when requested by your browser). Therefore,
your ranking by a search engine is determined by the algorithm (process
or method -- in this case for search engine ranking). Moreover, while you can attempt to master a search engines
ranking algorithm to your advantage, this cannot be done with an Internet
directory because humans view submissions to the directory.
"It
is crucial that you get listed in the
notable Internet directories."
While
the majority of Internet users find your site via the search engines,
it is crucial that you get listed in the notable Internet directories.
Why you ask? There are many distinct and important answers to this question.
One of the ways search engines determine how valuable your web pages,
and site are, has to do with how many other sites (especially sites in
your industry) link to your site. This is known as link popularity. The
reasoning to the search engine owners, is if other sites (please
note in -- your industry) link to your site, your site must be
a valuable authority site.
Moreover,
It is important to note, the links to your site should be from other sites
in your industry. Otherwise, the search engines may think your site is
a link farm, which is considered a form of Search Engine SPAM. Search
Engine SPAM, is the unwarranted manipulation of the search algorithm to
inflate your site's results. This is one of the reasons why
you should be developing a reciprocal link program with other sites in
your industry.
Getting
back to why Internet directories are important to your search engine ranking,
is an important concept of search engine ranking called page rank.
This builds on our earlier discussion of the concept of links to your
site. This links indicate the value of your site to your industry. The
search engines, in this regard, don't just look at how many links are
linking to your site, but also the quality of the sites that link to you.
If the sites linking to you have a high page rank (which indicates to
the search engines that high quality sites are linking to your site),
then they know that these high quality sites wouldn't be linking to you,
unless you also have a high quality site.
In
other words, the search engines give higher ranks to sites with links
from other quality web sites. In this regard a reciprocal link isn't just
a link. A link to your site from a web site with a high page rank may
be more valuable than links from 10 low quality web sites. This is the
crucial point to remember with getting listed with Internet Directories.
Search
engines give much more weight to links to your
site from Internet Directories, than any other link partner
that you have linking to your site.
So
getting listed in Internet Directories is very important to your search
engine marketing and optimization strategies. In our next issue I will
explain what Internet Directories are looking for, and how to get listed
in them. If you are looking for personalized search engine optimization
or advertising (including key word research, analysis of your competition,
writing advertising sales copy-editing for pay-per-click search engine
ad campaigns, etc.), please give me a call toll free at: 866-324-9669

My Sites are Experiencing 17 Top 20 Rankings In Yahoo
and Google Since, I Read and used the Search Engine Promotion
Tips in this Book. Therefore I Highly Recommend it.
As
I mentioned in earlier issues, there has been the shocking loss of two
major minority mega-sites sites: Netnoir, and The Black World Today.
Both of these pioneering sites reached hundreds of thousands of site
visitors a month. These sites also offered great content but, were under
supported in terms of advertising from major corporations. Furthermore,
they did not develop a loyal paying subscriber base which supported
the e publications. This signals the end of the free content days of
the Internet.
