the Young Black Millionaire on Oprah, Runs a Viable Digital Publishing
Business, and Now Wants to Help You Take Your Business to the Next
Level!"
Profile
and Interview by Kamau Austin
It is quite apparent that Andrew Morrison is more down
to earth, than most of the Business Gurus On-line. Many of the Web Gurus
read like the Who's Who of Academia. Personalities like Dr. Ken Evoy,
Dr. Ralph Wilson, Dr. Kevin Nunley, Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, Dr. Michael Fortrin,
etc. of course receive instant credibility on-line. However, Andrew
Morrison, seems just like us, in that he grew up in the tough streets
of New York, as an immigrant, to become a media mogul and successful business
man.
Andrew was born in Kingston, Jamaica and
migrated to the United States at the age of four. He grew up in the East
Flatbush section of Brooklyn at Vanderveer Estates. After graduation from
Bronx High School of Science, Andrew studied Electrical Engineering at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). His business and leadership skills
were developed in college. In his
junior year, he became the first African-American to be elected the President
of the Student Union. Quite an accomplishment considering that RPI had
less than 150 African-American students on campus. As the President, he
was responsible for 120 student clubs and managed a $5.4 million dollar
budget. Andrew appeared on the ABC television show, "Nightline
with Ted Koppel", to discuss student leadership.
Andrew currently runs RFM Marketing, which develops interactive
CD-ROMs, for magazine publishers and retailers. Andrew is considered one
of the leading experts in the field of advertiser-supported database marketing
programs. His first company, Nia Direct, reached $3 million
dollars in sales by providing innovative direct marketing services
for clients such as P&G, AOL and Coca-Cola.
Andrew served as the Chairman of the Board for The Blue
Nile Passage, Inc., a rite-of-passage program for inner-city youth. He
also sat on the Board of Trustees for the Rensselaer Alumni Association,
and was a member of the Presidential Search Committee for RPI. Andrew
credits a great deal of his business success to the Young Entrepreneurs
Association (YEO).
His
business success has landed him as one of Entrepreneur magazine's youngest
and brightest Entrepreneurs and Crain's Magazine 40 Business leaders
Under Age 40. He was also awarded the Young Direct Marketer
of the Year Award by the Direct Marketing Association. Andrew has
appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and CNBC. His company
was featured in Black Enterprise Magazine, The Wall Street Journal
and Advertising Age. He frequently gives lectures on direct marketing
at New York University and industry seminars.
Students at Evander Childs High School in the Bronx have
been motivated to become entrepreneurs through Andrew's involvement in
Junior Achievement. He was grateful to deliver the commencement address
in 1994.
Andrew can be found each Sunday serving on the Deacon Board
of the Abyssinian Baptist Church located in the village of Harlem. He
says "he obtains most of his marketing insights from his wife and
their 6 year-old daughter".
Most recently, Andrew started a new venture called Small
Business Camp (www.SmallBusinesCamp.com)
to help small and minority business people take their businesses to the
next level. Small Business Camp - is an intensive hands-on weekend seminar.
On Friday, you can start with just an idea and by Sunday night, you will
leave with a moneymaking website, attention-generating direct mail campaign,
and a public relations strategy to help you gain local and national coverage.
With Andrew's accomplishments he certainly has the background to help
you reach your goals with the insights shared at Small
Business Camp. If you want to check out what the Camp has to offer
or how Andrew can help you why don't you take his free telecourse by calling

The Interview
Kamau: When did you know that you wanted to be an
Entrepreneur?
Morrison: As a junior
in high school I was involved with Junior Achievement and sold clothes
hangers to my neighbors. That experience exposed me to the concepts of
profit margins and sales.
Kamau: What other Entrepreneurs Inspired you?
Morrison: Marcus Garvey
has always been one of my major heroes. With no Internet and sophisticated
mass communication system he was able to motivate others and launch several
businesses.
Kamau: What was the pivotal point in your business
career that you overcame to become a success?
Morrison: I would say
my fear of public speaking and writing. My best advice to others is to
find a coach and just do it. Repeated and consistent action can
get you over any hurdle.
Kamau: In your Profile, you state - that your family
is where you get many of your business Ideas (wife and daughter), could
you elaborate on this more?
Morrison: As a marketer,
I look at myself as a cultural anthropologist. My job is to study human
behavior and determine why and how we respond to certain offers.
Your family can be a great viewing post.
Kamau: You are a deacon in your Church, what role
if any, does your spiritual belief system help you in your business affairs
and values?
Morrison: At the end of the day my
relationship to God and my fellow man is all that really matters. The
Gospel gives me the encouragement, to move through difficult situations,
with the assurance that if God, can take care of the lilies of the field,
then He can certainly take care of me.
Kamau: What made you transition from a successful,
traditional, and established direct marketing business like Nia Direct,
to venture into digital marketing
communications like CD-ROM distribution and now the Internet?
Morrison: The #1 rule
of direct mail is to never fall in love with your product. I see CD-ROMs,
wireless and the Internet as distribution vehicles. I enjoy using my unique
ability to create compelling offers in different mediums.
Kamau: What do you foresee as the potential and
future for minority business on the Internet and wireless communications?
Morrison: The opportunity
is huge! Just focus on solving problems in areas that are in line with
your passion, and you will be successful. You also need to examine if
any of your belief systems are holding you back. I often tell people that
the only thing that separates them today, from where they want to be tomorrow,
are three (3) new beliefs, and seven (7) new professional relationships.
Therefore, it's all about believing in yourself and being ready for new
and empowering relationships.
Kamau: Why did you start the Small Business Camp
and How do you feel it will help small and minority business people?
Morrison: Small Business Camp grew
out of my coaching practice. As I began to witness the personal and financial
growth of my clients, I wanted to find a forum for me to reach more people.
