"Free Money"
How Women Finance a Small Business

"Free Money" Is it true or is it hype? It is a fact that millions of women are starting small/home-based businesses each year at twice the rate of men. Everyone wants a freebie and every where you look there are ads screaming "Claim your share of "Free Government Money". However, are these ads making false claims? If you have tried searching for this free grant money then you know that finding grants can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

There are many options available to women starting or growing a small business. The three most, popular financing methods women choose are:

1. Credit cards
2. Grants
3. Loans

Of course, some of these options may not be suitable for everyone depending upon your personal circumstances. The first step to seeking
capital is to determine your needs and goals. In order to help insure your future success you need to have a business plan. You should not jump head first, into any business venture without giving it
considerable thought. Just as a mechanic needs tools, you also need tools to get the job done. Prepare yourself by arming yourself with the proper tools.

Your Power Tools:

1. Business Plan
2. A clear vision of your business (Your goals)
3. You may also need collateral! (If applying for a loan)
4. Personal skill/knowledge of your business
5. Communication (Ability to pitch your idea!)
6. Personal commitment

Some of the tools just mentioned may, require that you educate yourself a bit more and some require that you spend more time clarifying your ideas. Each of the three popular financing options
has pros and cons.

Credit cards: They can be very useful if you only need a small amount of start-up capital, $1,000 or less. They allow you to gain access to funds immediately. Many home-based businesses got their start with the help of Visa/Mastercard. One of the main drawbacks associated with this option is the cost involved in using this line of instant credit (APR, finance fees etc.).

Grants: Grants are a wonderful funding resource however; you should know the facts before you dive into what may be some very deep water. Grant seeking is a process and it requires at least some general knowledge in order to be successful. For those of you looking for, free grant money you have got your work cut out for you. Grants are not free unless you consider spending hours, weeks or even months of your time researching and writing a complete grant proposal free. If you are a true entrepreneur, you certainly know that your time is
worth money and your personal grant seeking is a non-paid job with no, guarantees! The main drawback here is that grant funding can take
anywhere from three to 12 months. Are you in a position to wait that long to get started?

Loans: The most traditional method of small business financing. Government loans have established numerous women-owned businesses.
The government makes these loans available through The Small Business Administration to help encourage business ownership. If you need
$10,000 or more for startup this can be a great option as they also provide a support system to help you manage and grow your business.
You will have access to the (Score program) of retired executives who volunteer their expertise to assist small business owners. The main drawback with these, loans are the fact that you must qualify for the loan. Your personal credit history will be considered and in some instances, you may need collateral. You will also need to invest some
of your personal funds in the business and most importantly, you must have a solid business plan.

Whether you are applying for a loan or a grant, part of your business success will depend upon your willingness and ability to invest in your business. This investment may mean time, money or as in most instances, it includes both. Educating yourself is your best bet; you can read a book on the subject, search the Internet or purchase other
educational materials. All of these choices require a financial investment of some sort. Real entrepreneurs recognize the old adage "It takes money to make money". If you are one of those people who find it difficult to part with a few dollars you may want to reconsider your idea of owning your own business.

The most successful women entrepreneurs are risk takers they love a challenge and they are willing to invest in their business and in educating themselves to insure their future success. Stop looking for freebies, they are not worth the time and effort it takes to find them. Instead, spend your time and money wisely. Look for resources that provide long-term benefits. Business support groups, mentors, books, training, membership in women's organizations etc.
